Day 1: New Brunswick and Princeton

My first full day in New Jersey involved getting a tour of the area from my friend.  One of the things that we were really looking forward to indulging in was the R U Hungry Grease Truck at Rutgers.  This truck is famous for serving Fat Sandwiches filled with all sorts of fried foods that for the safety of the general public probably shouldn’t be combined together.  The R U Hungry truck was a part of a challenge on the New Jersey episode of Man vs. Food and the “Fat Darrell” sandwich was named the best sandwich in America by Maxim in 2004.

Even though we got there a little after noon, the lunch rush I was expecting was absent.  Most of the different sandwich variations seemed exactly the same, save for a different sauce.  I went with the Fat Kushion–a french roll filled with cheesesteak, bacon, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, jalapenos, hot sauce, and topped with french fries.

To be honest, the sandwich was kind of a letdown.  Even though it had so many ingredients that are so delicious (and calorie-generous) on their own, the sandwich seemed to fall flat.  If I were a college student, the idea of a fat sandwich would sound like manna from heaven, but unfortunately even all of the deep-fried, fat-laden ingredients couldn’t satisfy my hunger.

In the afternoon, my friend and I took advantage of the sun with a game of catch.  Throwing the baseball had always been our break from homework or a summer evening go-to back in high school.  It was nice to reminisce about those memories and be reminded of the beauty of simple things in life.

As the sun was setting and things were cooling down, my friend took me on a tour of the Princeton campus.  The only other college campus I’ve ever been really enthralled with was Stanford.  It’s probably no coincidence that these were the most prestigious campuses I have visited.  My first visit of the Princeton campus couldn’t have been more perfect.  As we walked through, I was charmed by the Gothic architecture poised valiantly in the rays of the setting sun, the lampposts coming to life to illuminate our path.

As much as I wanted to try somewhere new for every meal, I knew it was wise to at least make a couple ourselves.  My friend and I made some paninis for dinner and washed them down with a couple local brews.  On paper it never seems fun to me, but cooking and sharing a meal with someone is one of the most intimate, satisfying experiences.  I’ve found that as long as you can collaborate with others and keep an open mind about the myriad of results that you might end up with, it’ll be a great time.
